Centro das Artes Casa das Mudas
Tuesday to Sunday – 10.00 hrs. to 19.00 hrs.
Location: Calheta

The new Art Centre of Casa das Mudas is a design piece of art in itself, and was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe 2005 architecture award. It has a programme of temporary expositions featuring all kinds of arts and styles by local, national and international artists. There are also frequent dance, theatre and other artistic performances. (Entrance fee € 5,00 – 50 % discount for senior citizens and children)

City's Museum

Located within the Town Hall, the museum displays the 500 years of existence of Funchal city.

Contemporary Art Museum

Location: Forte São Tiago – old town

The museum exhibits a collection of Portuguese contemporary art. It also organizes several exhibitions by inviting artists and works from other galleries and institutions.

The museum has several thematic exhibitions such as tiles, religious sculptures, furniture and pottery.

Location: Rua da Mouraria

The place to find the fauna, flora and geology of Madeira Island. It also has an aquarium and the Municipal Library.

Henrique e Francisco Franco Museum

As the name indicates, the Henrique and Francisco Franco brothers created the masterpieces presented here.

This place exhibits traditional Madeira embroidery, side by side with traditional costumes and furniture.

Madeira Story Centre
Opening times: 10.00 hrs. – 18.00 hrs (Open daily except for Christmas Day)

This spectacular, interactive museum allows the visitor to go back in time on a virtual journey and ‘relive’ in chronological sequence the archipelago’s great historic events, from its volcanic birth 14 million years ago to the first hydroplane landing in Madeira. The Madeira Story Centre also offers a multifunctional panoramic terrace equipped with telescopes, a theme café and a souvenir shop with exclusive Madeira-related articles.

This museum gathers ethnographical objects relating to the regional culture and society.

This museum exhibits a collection about Christopher Columbus, including rare books and coins.

Núcleo Museológico da Cidade do Açúcar-CMF (Sugar Museum)

Location: Praça Colombo

A museum dedicated to sugar. The visitor learns about the role that the fabrication and exportation of sugar played in the economic and social life Madeira’s and its cultural and artistic influences during the 15th and 16th century.

Quinta das Cruzes Museum

Portuguese and furniture from other countries from the 16th to the 19th century. Porcelains and Portuguese faience from the 17th to the 19th century. Portuguese sculpture and paintings.

Sacred Art Museum

Location: Rua do Bispo

Religious sculptures from the 16th to the 18th century and sacred jewellery from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Universo de Memórias
Tuesday to Saturday - 10.00 hrs. to 12.00 hrs. and 14.00 hrs. to 17.00 hrs. (Sundays - 10.00 hrs. to 12.00 hrs.) Closed on Mondays and public holidays.
Location: Calçada do Pico

The “Universe of Memories” was founded and financed by the present Secretary of Tourism, João Carlos Abreu, and reflects his life as traveller, journalist and public personality. Ten thousand pieces, such as books, ceramics, paintings and bronze objects from all over the world are exhibited in 14 rooms in a house located right opposite the entrance to the Quinta das Cruzes Museum. There is also a Tea House in this museum.

Whale Museum

Location: Caniçal – Machico

Exhibits: An interesting collection of artefacts related to the whale fishing industry, which was very important in Madeira until the 1970's.

Wine Museum

Location: Rua 5 de Outubro

All there is to know about Madeira Wine - this museum is a ‘must see’. The visitor will find anything from pictures to machinery, all related to the culture and production of wine.

Shopping
Local tradition and costumes are reflected in much of the items on sale, wine and lace being major items of interest.

Commerce
Commercial establishments are open from 09.00 hrs. until 13.00 hrs., and then from 15.00 hrs. until 19.00 hrs., from Monday to Friday. Saturdays they only open from 09.00 hrs. until 13.00 hrs. However, some Shopping Centres open every day from 10.00 hrs. to 20.00. hrs.
